Urgent Care vs. Emergency Care

Understanding the Difference

Veterinarian in Arlington, TX

At Veterinary Emergency Hospital of Arlington, we believe in providing clarity when it comes to your pet’s health. Distinguishing between “Urgent” and “Emergency” situations is crucial for making informed decisions and ensuring the well-being of your furry family members. We are proud to provide care for non-life-threatening conditions that aren’t serious enough for the emergency veterinarian. Here are some examples of the types of illnesses and injuries we treat.

Urgent Care Symptoms/Cases

At Veterinary Emergency Hospital of Arlington, we provide prompt care for issues that demand immediate attention, offering peace of mind to pet parents facing everyday concerns.

  • Broken Toe Nail
  • Coughing/Sneezing
  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting/Diarrhea
  • Ocular/Nasal Discharge
  • Euthanasia

Mild Emergency Symptoms/Cases

In situations requiring more intensive care, our team assesses stability and, if needed, may refer to our Midlothian location. Depending on case load, code level, and patient severity, we may stabilize and transfer to Midlothian for further evaluation and potential hospitalization.

  • Allergic Reaction
  • Ingested Foreign Object
  • Toxin Exposure
  • Broken Bones
  • Snake Bite
  • Major Wounds/Cuts
  • Seizures/Tremors

Emergency Symptoms/Cases

Ideally, we recommend transfers to Veterinary Emergency Hospital of Midlothian for life-threatening emergencies. In instances where getting there quickly is challenging, or if another ER is more accessible, our Arlington urgent care can stabilize your pet, provide estimates for hospitalized care, and then facilitate a referral to VEHM for continued specialized care.

  • Unresponsive
  • Hit By A Car
  • Respiratory Distress
  • Pale Gums
  • Trouble Urinating
  • Abdominal Swelling
  • Direct Refferal For Hospitalization

Rechecks & Referrals

These are non-urgent cases/symptoms that involve conditions or concerns that a referring veterinarian is unable to accommodate or find time to address.

  • Worms in stool
  • Ear infections
  • Skin infections
  • Allergies
  • Check lump
  • Small cuts and abrasions
  • Parasites (fleas/ticks/mange/ringworm)
  • Care of remains

Rechecking for cases/symptoms initially seen by the Veterinary Emergency of Midlothian (VEHM) as long as the patient’s condition is not critical. We recommend (rDVM) follow-ups but in some instances following back up at VEHM is better for the patient and the client.

  • Blood work rechecks
  • Bandage changes
  • Suture/drain tube removal
  • Cases not showing improvement
  • Outpatient parvo

Please Proceed Immediately to Veterinary Emergency Hospital Midlothian If Your Pet is Experiencing These Symptoms

  • Abdominal Swelling
  • Unable to Urinate
  • Respiratory Distress
  • Heat Stroke
  • Unresponsive

Pawsitive Reviews Tell Our Story

My pet was not feeling good not eating and seemed very bloated. It was Friday night and his usual vet was closed. While on the search for an Emergency Room I ran into this one. I do not regret bringing Simba for them to care for him. He was diagnosed with Parvo and was treated with care. Dr. Lamarche was also very helpful to provide the necessary steps for his recovery. I wanted to thank the team for the support they had provided

They got us right in after we called to say we were on our way
Check-in was easy and they took our dog back immediately. We had them do x-rays since vets can't just look at a dog and magically know what's wrong. We paid them for their time and diagnostic skills and were on our way with no foreign body seen on x-rays! Best case scanario. Vet care isn't free and they were there when we needed them. I'll pay $400 for that every day of the week.

My big Old English Bulldog (100 lbs) is shy of new people and tends to be growly/nippy. The tech has frenchies and bulldogs so knows the temperaments of bulldogs. She gave Tank time to warm up to her and then found ways to get the samples and treat him without stressing him. I was very happy with the vet and the tech and the time it took for him to be treated. This is my backup vet when my vet is booked and my dogs are in immediate need.

I'm not one to leave reviews, however they earned it! I brought in my cat with a non-critical emergency and the staff was as quick and attentive with her and I as they would've been with a critical patient. The office was clean with ample parking as well. Felt like my cat was treated exceedingly well and they seemed fair in terms of treatment recommendations and prices. Hopefully won't be needing to visit an ER any time soon, but if I do it'll be here.

I brought in my puppy for an allergic reaction, his entire face was swollen up and I was panicking, as soon as we arrived they took him back immediately to start on him. I am so grateful for their urgency and kindness most ER’s I have been to lack empathy but the staff here were the most empathetic and kind people and I cannot thank you all enough within 2 hours they were able to get the swelling down and inform me what needed to be done for him they were so professional I cannot recommend this place enough! They are so wonderful!
